We are all made from our experiences, RW Excavating is no different.
Dan Wilson began to farm in the mid 1970’s after graduating from ISU. Life led him into corn, soybeans and pigs. A little became a lot. Growing nearly 80,000 pigs per year in the 1990’s and early 2000’s taught him much about people and systems. The same with his 5000 acres of cropland. These were excellent training for the construction teams that exist now. The pigs left, but the farmland remains to this day.
RW began in the 1990’s as a hobby in building construction, farm terracing, and farm pond construction. The hobby grew. Soon we started to build ponds for neighbors and friends. NRCS standards, practical applications and work completed were standards that led to success in the business. Communication to owners on what to expect when the project is complete is key.
RW really started with some horse trails at Jester Park near Grimes. Then a mine reclamation project in Bussey, Iowa moving nearly one million yards of dirt. This project won the National Abandoned Mine Reclamation Award in 2018. We built a large sediment basin for Lake Panorama, moving about 500,000 tons of dirt in 2016. We expanded into sediment basin cleaning, stream bank stabilization and lake renovation. We have set many concrete and wooden deck pedestrian bridges and are recognized installers.
Dan created a team of people that enjoyed making a difference in the world. His sons, Mike and David, run the farm and help with construction. John Readout leads some of the crews, while Dan himself leads other crews. As a team, we are RW Excavating Solutions. Each of us brings talents to the team and all parts are equally important.
We have learned expectations from many municipalities, owners, engineers, and other contractors. We have worked on Yeader creek, Easter Lake, several Polk County Conservation Parks and begin Hickory Grove Lake this year.
We bring experience in making difficult things happen. We work in mud year-round. If you need 5,000 tons of rip rap moved across a river and through a swamp, we are your guys.
